Pleading Guilty & The Conflict within

Well, I am guilty of being remiss - not that I think I have been missed much. Actually - there is so much to write, with a maddening travel schedule - I simply couldn't find the time ( and, I didn't want to do injustice to the subjects - which I think are important and much of it based on first-hand conversations with very knowledgeable persons from the industry).

But, I intend making up for that soon. Meanwhile, I would commend to you the following article published in the edit-page of today's The Telegraph:

The Conflict Within - Reform Alone will restore the media's meaningful role : By R. Goplakrishnan

(check out the link: http://www.telegraphindia.com/1081201/jsp/opinion/story_10183628.jsp)

Gopal, as most of us know is a Director of Tata Sons. But also, as many may not know, he is a Director on the Board of ABP Pvt Ltd - the publishers of The Telegraph ( which the paper should have mentioned - in the interest of "full-disclosure", as MINT does in such cases). But, coming from him - the opinion is of great import, I think.

Welcome back :)
Cannot agree more with Mr. Gopalakrishnan's POV.
We may actually add the James Bond movie The World is Not Enough & the excellent George Clooney film, Good Night & Good Luck, to the list of references.

Frankly, IF the media honchos "were" concerned by even a tenth of GK's desired levels, we'd have had many ombudsmen by now.
So, this may become, for all you know, a "Feel Good" article from a guilty manager, largely driven by tugs of the ageing conscience!

Unfortunately, moral bankruptcy has become so endemic, that today we have started looking at almost everything, cum grano salis! That grain too, unlike that of the humble salt, has blown up to Hulkish proportions.

Why are we singling out media at all? Simply because they carry all the bullshit, happily, to the unsuspecting "market"? Well, if media had refused, some other "organ" would have been used by the suits, to achieve similar ends.

Just think for a moment: A shoddy leather wallet from a huge brand is sold at a price 20 times it's cost, even after the 50% discount, emblazoned boldly across the right hand pages!
The problem is not with the media, it never was!

It is, as always, with people, who want everything & more, by doing nothing and less!

We keep calling our politicos "corrupt", "incompetent",what not!

Apart from the slick suits, how are they different from these "guys with the accent"?

Let's not expect media to act responsibly anytime soon! The wheels are in very similar, greasy palms.....
